Do you think that you know all there is to know about tyres? Do you consider yourself an expert driver who is always on the right side of safety when out and about? If so, it is a good idea to take the Kwik-Fit Tyre Challenge. You will be asked to answer a series of questions involving tyre information, tread levels, braking speeds, and which tyres are best suited for specific weather conditions. You are provided with a rating of zero to ten immediately after the test has been completed. Do you feel that you have what it takes to score a ten out of ten?
Why is the Test Important?
As I have been driving for well over 20 years, I firmly believed that I would score at the top of the list. However, this was far from the actual truth. After struggling with a handful of questions that I thought I should know, I submitted my score only to realise that a mere five of my ten answers were correct. This was a major wake-up call in terms of motorway safety, as I am regularly required to take long-distance business trips.
Long-Distance Road Trips and Tyre Safety
We are all aware that the weather throughout the United Kingdom can suddenly change when we least expect it. Unfortunately, this will often occur while out and about. Rain could easily devolve into sleet and snow. The roads may suddenly become slick due to the dangerous presence of black ice. Considering the fact that many long-distance excursions take place in regions quite far from a garage or MOT station, the risks are very real indeed. This is why it is crucial to know the answers to some basic tyre-related questions such as:
- What braking distances are required at certain speeds?
- When should a damaged tyre be replaced?
- What do the markings on the side of a tyre signify?
- What variants are suitable for poor weather conditions?
- How often should I inspect my tyres?
The information listed above will become invaluable if you hope to ensure the safety of your vehicle at all times.
My Personal Experiences
As I am no stranger to long-distance journeys, I have my fair share of stories to tell. One of my most memorable experiences was being forced to change a tyre on the side of the road while in the midst of a snow squall. I learned later that I had not equipped snow tyres before leaving home; a mistake that will certainly not be made twice. Thankfully, nothing more than my ego suffered slight damage.
Whether you are planning a road trip with the family over the holiday season or you simply wish to test your knowledge of tyres, be sure to take the Tyre Challenge.
