Following the success of a similar project based at Fulham Broadway Methodist Church, LEAT is now able to offer a low-cost psychotherapy service for those affected by HIV.
The service will be available at a variety of locations throughout London. It will employ a therapeutic model ideally suited to the issues raised by HIV in which the emphasis is philosophical and reflective rather than medical or psychological and which works from the basic assumption that people need to find ways of making sense of their lives before they make sense of their problems and of themselves.
The focus of the therapy is very much on the here and now rather than on the past. There is a refreshing absence of jargon and no-one will be expected to lie on a couch!
The service will be free from religious or ideological bias and will be available to people of all faiths or none. The only criteria are that prospective clients should be those affected by HIV and prepared to attend regular weekly sessions of fifty minutes duration for at least twelve consecutive weeks.
For the purposes of assessing a client's eligibility the definition of those "affected by HIV" will include the sero-negative partners, friends or families of those diagnosed with HIV as well as faith leaders, carers or workers within the HIV sector.
All psychotherapists working within the service will either have completed or be in the final stages of a training process that can take up to five years or more and which culminates in full accreditation under the auspices of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. They are bound by the UKCP's Ethical Framework for Good Practice and subject to the Professional Conduct Procedure currently in force. They will also be fully insured and indemnified.
