The aim of the HIV Community Chaplaincy Service is to provide a pastoral and spiritual response to people living with HIV anywhere in London . The service has been in operation sine 2002 and is complementary to those offered by the statutory sector.
In spite of the advances in treatment options and increasing public awareness, the fact is that stigma and discrimination of people affected by HIV stills exists. Because of this, many people feel isolated fear rejection and are in a state of despair.
The Chaplaincy creates a space where the person can feel safe, where they can be open, honest and candid and be assured that all information shared is confidential. Through conversation, the Chaplaincy can explore the person's story, revealing hidden meanings and identify resources that the person has to enable them to take the next steps towards recovery. The Chaplaincy also has strong working relationships with other voluntary and statutory agencies. In order to provide a holistic approach, the Chaplaincy is in a position to signpost people to these services should the client request it.
The service is provided in your home, hospital, a location of your choice or by telephone. The goal is to help the client attain a realistic and optimistic view of the future and the possibilities, which exist for a creative and fulfilling life within it. The service gives the client the opportunity to discuss specific concerns and to help develop ongoing strategies to manage and overcome them. The service is a listening ear, a friendly face and a supportive voice.
Clients can refer themselves directly to this service or via a voluntary or statutory service.
